Shine On Hollywood Magazine 2-YEAR ANNIVERSARY JULY-AUGUST 2014

SOHM 2-Year Anniversary July-August 2014:
http://shineonhollywoodmagazine.com/shinejulyaugust2014/web/flipviewerxpress.html

Dear Readers:

Here we are. Year number two!

It’s been exciting and revealing and more than I could have ever imagined. The outpouring of love and support from everyone has been overwhelming.
This last year was bursting with amazing stories of struggles and triumphs from successful artists in many disciplines. We had the amazing story of World-renowned artist Cao Young who overcame soul crushing adversity and has become one of the most sought-after artists of our time. His cover photo even appeared on the NASDAQ building in world-famous Times Square, NYC.

Another example of someone who overcame huge challenges as a child with nowhere to go and no one to look after him is Rocky Gathercole. His rise to the top of the fashion world is a stellar achievement to say the least.

June’s issue featured the work of Yoshiki, an amazing, award-winning musician, writer, producer and manager who has taken the world by storm. The tragic death of his father when he was just ten years old changed his path as he continued to learn all aspects of the music business. His trajectory has been nothing but stellar and is the most popular artist in Asia and soon, all corners of the globe.

It’s amazing how many successful artists come from troubled childhoods. Our goal is to highlight their successes to encourage the rest of us to triumph over adversity and help the up and coming entertainment professionals find their way.

Our reach is global, from shore to shore. Just like what is represented in the beautiful painting of the Santa Monica Pier by Angelo Garcia on the front cover, our shores welcome all creative artists from around the globe.

We have featured 42 industry professionals in the past year and have done our best to showcase celebrities you will easily recognize along with lesser know, yet equally successful entertainment personalities. They are all doing the good work and giving back to their communities. People like producer, Bobby DeLeon who works behind the scenes with some very powerful people. He is one of the unsung heroes for those less fortunate.

Then, there is the very visible and highly regarded, Dr. Aida Takla-O’Reilly. Growing up in Egypt and proving herself over and over again, she has become one of the true voices of the entertainment business with two times at the helm of the Hollywood Foreign Press-the people who put on the Golden Globes. She embodies the true meaning of our mission statement:

We are dedicated to providing a positive, meaningful and educational experience and to inspire our readers with knowledge and information from creative, qualified industry professionals.

We have so many exciting additions to the magazine ahead. We are working on a live webcast which will be highlighting all the good in the entertainment industry just like the magazine does. The show will feature guests in the spotlight and those who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make the magic happen. They will be sharing their journeys as well as advice about how you can start or continue your journey in the entertainment field. These will include all the disciplines we include in our magazine: Film, TV, music, art, Fashion, Ethnic diversity and anything else we feel will help our readers. This will help all of our viewers learn how they can excel in the business and give back to their community where it is most needed.

It has always been and will always continue to be my goal to use a variety of formats to spread the word about all the good that is happening in the entertainment industry. Not just in Hollywood, but around the world as well. We, at SOHM, feel like our readers are ready for the good news about celebrities and successful entertainment professionals and are ready to discard all the gossip and politics and negative stories that flood the world today. That is why we are growing at such an unbelievable rate across the globe.

We will be having some fun and exciting contests to enter to win some great prizes. Stay tuned to find out more about that!

Also, we are working on a weekly blog for our subscribers. Are you a subscriber? The magazine will continue to be a free publication, but subscribers will have access to additional material and information. Sign up today so you can get the monthly issues emailed directly to you.

We continue to present our Share Your Shine, Tell Your Story segment. If you or anyone you know is giving back to the Arts or Pop Culture Community or any great cause and would like to share your or their story with our readers, please do not hesitate to send us these important stories so we can share your shine with our readers and viewers.

One of these stories we are featuring this month is the great work being done for at-risk youth with the Nicholas Walters Youth Foundation, NWYF. Headed up by Nicholas Silvio Walters and Elie Cane who work with youth in mentoring programs to guide these kids who don’t have the support at home every young person needs. Look for their stories inside and for donation information.

Don’t forget that you can go back through these last two years and read any of the archived issues, see the stories and gain that much more insight into the entertainment and philanthropic businesses.

Lastly, I would like to take a moment to thank my staff. Their tireless efforts to bring the stories to you, the readers, make this magazine and all its parts what it is today. The interviews, entertainment reviews and all the other pieces that make up Shine On Hollywood Magazine are due to a group effort where we support, encourage and heap praise on each other for continued jobs that are exceedingly well done.
I am excited about our third year and all that is in store for our readers and, soon, our viewers.

Next month, we will be featuring Music professionals where, as always, we feature players from major studios right alongside the important work and creative projects by independent, or “Indi” production companies.

Stay tuned and let us know how you think we are doing.

Enjoy reading!

One Patient

One Patient: where institutional corruption dictates how health care is allocated – leaving many with care likened to that of a third world country…if any.

20130417144921-onepatient3

A film by Libby Spears

A small team, without federal, state or county assistance has embarked upon a personal mission…to provide access to healthcare, regardless of ability to pay, without discrimination.

We hope that this film will provide a greater insight into the governmental and institutional corruption that dictates how healthcare is allocated – leaving many with care likened to that of a third world country…if any. This film seeks to call into question the inconsistencies in healthcare as it relates to those most at risk, the poor and un/underinsured.

Help make it happen for the team! Contribute to One Patient:   http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/one-patient?c=home

Today in America, the face of poverty has changed. No longer is it the homeless man under the L or the toothless woman on the corner who pleads with her eyes…and her cup. As America grapples with devastating economic times, the harsh reality is that the face of poverty is now sitting to your left, to your right, and possibly even in your very own home. Illness and injury know no socioeconomic status and no one is immune – the rich, the poor, the middle-class. Let us introduce a world where lives are changed despite the decline of governmental programs. Together we hope to challenge the stereotypical beliefs about those in need, and find sustainable ways to address healthcare in a failing economy.

While you had the opportunity to meet Mike Williams in the trailer, you will meet many more patients from vastly different backgrounds who share one common theme, all of them were denied access to or let down by our health care system and they were so close to simply giving up. You will walk along side us as you meet each patient – documenting who they are, where they come from and why the quest to maintain health and wellness has been a struggle.  You will witness their commitment, their raw emotion, their accountability, their challenges and their successes.

What do you do when you are forced to choose between rent and food, between bus fare and medicine? How do you secure a future for yourself and your family when the pain you feel renders you completely disabled…or addicted? It is widely understood that in the United States of America, despite the promise of Obama Care, healthcare is not and will not be afforded to all Americans equally.

Watch as we follow Dr. Dan and Karla trekking to the Middle East where taking care of patients in refugee camps in Lebanon serves to fulfill the mission of serving those less fortunate yet remains as a means to keep their clinics open in the United States. See the irony when conditions in these camps and devastated countries are still superior to those found within the “safety net” health care system in the disparate areas of Chicago…where healthcare is often likened to a third world country.

Most critically however, the team hopes to leave a footprint, so that together we can build a foundation for future generations as we change the world…OnePatient at a time.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

If you aren’t able to contribute financially, you can still help!

SHARE the project with your friends and family. SPREAD the word on social media sites.

WHERE THE $ IS GOING

We already have 25% of our filming done and now we need $100,000 enabling us to continue to edit the footage we have already shot, and to continue filming. Your money will go toward production, editing, and appeals for the additional funds to complete the project. We will keep you posted on our progress every step of the way, including field reports from Lebanon in late June when our film crew will travel to the Middle East to film Dr. Dan working with the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF) to bring his medical expertise to the needs of the children living in refugee camps. Without these funds, we will NOT be able to make this trip happen!

WISH LIST: If we raise more than $100,000 we can make the film even better. More money means more time in the field and in the edit room, giving us greater production quality.

Sol made her first music video in 2011 with the song “BiPolar Love”. She explains that the reason for her writing this song was that at that moment of her life and although she felt immensely loved she also felt tied down and enclosed. Through this song she undertook a trip through “a wonderland” where she tried to describe her contradicting inner feelings. Soulful…Heartfelt… Sultry… Thought provoking… Meaningful The Musical Heart of Jennifer Lang

Jennifer Lang needs a few more votes. Push her to the top. The tracks are hot. Vote now. midem.sonichub.com/artist/jennife… #nowplaying #music #rt

— Ozzmak (@Ozzmak) January 18, 2013

“What excites me most about music,” New York-based singer/songwriter Jennifer Lang says, is simple: “The sound… music is in the ocean. It’s in your heart beat. It’s in your spirit.” Raised in church singing with an appropriately titled family act “The Lang Family,” Jennifer’s introduction to music and public performing started at eight years old. She was also a member of her church choir and sang in the school choir through high school. Jennifer’s secular music education blossomed when Jennifer and her brother pulled out their mother’s records and listened to the greats of the day including Aretha Franklin and Al Green along with hundreds of others.

For someone so steeped in music that it touches her very soul, you would think music is the reason Jennifer moved all the way from Pine Bluff, Arkansas to The Big Apple in an effort to pursue her musical dreams. She was actually already living there, having been hired by a political action group to organize lower income neighborhoods to help them get better city services. While in training, Jennifer was hired by the telephone company. And like the old phone company slogan goes, Jennifer “reached out and touched someone” with her singing voice at work.

Jennifer knew that if there was ever a time and a place for her to “go for it,” it was in New York City. She prayed about it “and asked God to lead me and protect me and keep me in good company, because although I didn’t know everything about the music business, I did realize that there were stories of bad things happening to sweet little girls like me. I educated myself, I read books, talked to attorneys, attended seminars and then started recording.”

With the completion on her follow-up album, “3’O Clock Saturday”, Jennifer continues the love theme with soulful tales of failing, forgiveness and being happy at the end of it all.
